Police seal Haryana-Punjab border after fight erupts over water


CHANDIGARH: Security forces sealed a busy portion of a national highway on the Haryana-Punjab border that links Delhi with Amritsar here today as result which motorists had to face inconvenience. A Police officer said, a 24 km stretch of the NH-1 was sealed off on the Ambala (Haryana)-Rajpura (Punjab) section following Indian National Lok Dal’s call of ‘Water War’ ion region, following this traffic was diverted. Daily thousands of motorists ply on the NH-1 to and from Punjab to go towards Delhi via Haryana. Following Punjab Police sealing of the highway in the state Haryana Police did the same on their side of the road to prevent any escalation. Police and central para-military forces, in riot gear and riot control vehicles were heavily posted on both sides of the states’ border at the Shambhu barrier, the entry point into Punjab from Haryana. There is high alert on border areas in Ambala and Patiala districts with Haryana’s principal opposition party the INLD expected to start digging of the controversial Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal to get water for the state. A helicopter was deployed to monitor the situation. Activists of the INLD activists and leaders started gathering at the Subzi Mandi ground in Ambala city, 10 km from the border.
