The city traffic police caught 14 persons who were allegedly driving vehicles under the influence of alcohol. They were produced in the Third Metropolitan Magistrate Court, which imposed ₹1,000 fine on each of them and ordered them to do traffic duties. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP-Traffic) Mr. Kranthi Rana Tata, the accused were caught at different junctions during a special drive. As per the orders, the accused were allotted traffic duties for three days at various junctions, he said. Under Section 185 of Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, persons who drive vehicle after consuming liquor are liable for six years’ imprisonment and ₹2,000 fine. If the same accused is caught twice in two years, he is liable for two years’ imprisonment and ₹3,000 fine, Mr. Kranthi said. He appealed to the parents to keep a vigil on students and youth as most of the accidents are occurring as the drivers are driving vehicles in drunken condition.
