In an explosion in front of a multi-storey building in the Nagerbazar area of Kolkata’s Dum Dum on Tuesday, 2 October, a seven-year-old boy identified as Bibhash Ghosh, was killed and several others injured.
The deceased, reportedly died in the city’s SSKM hospital after he was shifted there from RG Kar Medical College when his condition worsened. According to local media reports, the child’s mother has also been hospitalised with severe burn injuries.
Police said that four of the six people were ‘seriously injured’.
Local police said that it was a high-intensity blast. Four people were seriously injured and six injured. They found some iron nails, but couldn’t ascertain the cause of the blast yet as there was no smell of gunpowder.
A police officer said that the explosion took place outside a fruit shop on the ground floor of the building in Nagerbazar’s Kazipara area, which was under the jurisdiction of Dum Dum Police Station, at around 9 am. He added that the injured have been rushed to the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The building before which the explosion took place houses the office of South Dum Dum Municipality Chairperson Panchu Roy.
According to the Police, a forensic team and sniffer dogs have been sent to the spot to ascertain the nature of explosion.
