Surprise vehicles check were done on a confidential piece of information received by the city police near Omalur toll plaza on the Salem – Bengaluru national highway in the early hours of Saturday when they intercepted three mini vans. The vans that were intercepted were reportedly carrying 150 bags of gutkha products, 50 bags in each vehicle. Banned Gutkha products worth Rs.22.5 lakh have been seized and four persons have been arrested by the police in this regard.
After seizing both the products as well as the vehicle in which it was transported it was later taken to the Suramangalam police station. The police arrested the three drivers namely Karthi (25) of Kunjumariamman temple street in Salem city, Sakthivel (23) and Selvakumar (32), both of Pennagaram in Dharmapuri district. After conducting interrogation it was revealed that Madesh of Meyyanur in the city had engaged them on a hire basis for transporting the stock from Bengaluru to Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchi etc. Based on this information Madesh was also arrested.
