An FIR was lodged for allegedly harassing a Muslim man and his Hindu woman friend against unidentified people by the Kanpur police on Wednesday. The woman was forced to tie ‘rakhi’ to the man by a group of men, who claimed to be members of a right wing vigilante group, after humiliating the couple on camera in Kanpur’s Major Avinash Bhadauria Park in Govind Nagar area on Tuesday. The couple was in the park at around 2pm when the group arrived and asked them to reveal their identities. Video and pictures of what they described an exercise to track the ‘love jihadis’ and teach them a lesson to save Hindu girls were posted by members of the group. In the video, the girl was forced to give her mobile number and address. The group can be seen asking the woman to take a vow that the man would now be her brother. RK Chaturvedi, Circle Officer of Govind Nagar, said the police had registered a case suo-moto and that they are identifying the people and action would be taken. One of the group members, Mayank Verma, was detained by Govind Nagar police after identifying him through a Facebook post. The CO said that all aspects would be covered in the investigation and that they are trying to establish the identities of the victims, when asked why a case was registered against unidentified people when group members had posted pictures and videos on their pages.
