Eight traffickers, two men and six women, were arrested in a shocking case of child-trafficking when the Rachakonda Police busted the prostitution racket being planned in the aggressively developing temple town of Yadagarigutta in Telangana, on the lines of Tirumala-Tirupati. The police claimed that a Dr. Swamy, reportedly charged Rs. 25,000 from the racketeers for the injections he used to inject hormones to trigger early menstruation. According to the police, none of the girls had been pushed into prostitution yet but activists say that medical tests would be necessary to confirm the matter. Eyewitnesses said that the older girls were incidentally in a shock as they understood what they were trapped in. Mahesh Bhagwat, Commissioner of Rachakonda Police said that their child helpline got the information through another source and they mobilised their women police teams as well as the district welfare officers when one of the pimps called Kalyani bit a child to punish her. Investigations so far have revealed that the girls were purchased from other agents for Rs. one to two lakhs each, and that the younger the girl, the higher price she would fetch. It has been understood so far that all the children belong to poor or broken families. The members of the Dommara community are the kingpins. The members of this community in Telangana push thier girls into prostitution, while the males act as pimps and in Maharashtra they engage minors in street acrobatics. These brothels were inside homes in Ganesh Nagar, a colony where members of the community lived, ensuring no one witenesses the illegal activity going on. Nine of the 11 children were not from the Dommara community in this case. The children have been sent to a Child Welfare Committee-monitored rescue home where they will undergo counselling.
