Chennai: Greater Chennai Traffic Police has once again made the Pillion Riders helmet mandatory on two-wheelers.  Chennai police said in a statement that strict action would be taken against motorists and pillion riders under the Motor Vehicles Act if they drive without helmets in the city from Monday.

Although the helmet mandatory rule for pillion riders is already in place, it has not been strictly enforced due to the COVID-19 epidemic, police officials said.Between January and May 15, 2022, 80 riders without helmets and 18 pillion riders lost their lives, police said.

According to figures released by police, 611 people were killed and 3,294 injured in two-wheeler accidents in 2021.  Of the total deaths, 477 riders and 135 pillion riders were not wearing helmets.
