Siliguri: Siliguri is a metropolitan city that spans areas of the Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri districts in the Indian state of West Bengal. Siliguri is known as The Gateway of Northeast India and is popular for tea, timber, and tourism. It is located on the banks of the Mahananda River at the foothills of the Himalayas. Siliguri is the third-largest urban agglomeration in West Bengal, after Kolkata and Asansol. It lies 35 km away from its twin city, Jalpaiguri. The merging of the two cities makes them the largest metropolis of the region.
As West Bengal has reported 75,516 cases of COVID-19 so far, out of which 21,108 are active cases while 52,730 have been cured till now. The state has recorded 1,678 fatalities till now. Rakshabandhan is celebrated on the full-moon day of the Hindu month of Sravana (July/August), this festival celebrates the love of a brother for his sister. On this day, sisters tie Rakhi on the wrists of their brothers to protect them against evil influences and pray for their long life and happiness.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Rakshabandhan was not celebrated in the normal grand manner as it would normally be done in the usual course. The girls tied Rakhi to the hands of the policemen symbolizing that they were their brothers and through their act of tying the rakhi to protect them against the evil influence of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Siliguri Police of the Siliguri Police Commissionerate took a bold initiative and distributed masks, hand sanitizer, and Rakhi to strengthen the bondage between police and public. This was done by the police personal to safeguard the people from being affected by the COVID-19 infection that is spreading like wildfire.
The Police are risking their own lives as they are one of the frontline warriors in the fight against COVID-19. All the efforts that the police are taking are for the good of the public and to prevent the spread of Coronavirus which is taking a heavy toll on the lives of the people. The Police are taking a commendable effort during the critical period of COVID-19 pandemic to safeguard the people and also to get the trust and confidence of the people on the police that they are available to the public for the public service.
