Chennai: The United Nations General Council in a resolution passed in December 1987 proclaimed the 26th of June each year as “International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking Professor & Coordinator NSS Programme, University of Madras, Chepauk Campus, Chennai had organized an Online Programme “. As in previous years, this year also, the Narcotic Intelligence Bureau, CID of Tamil Nadu celebrated this day in a befitting manner as part of our continuing efforts to raise public awareness against this menace and acquaint the public with the steps taken by the Government against drug abuse and illicit trafficking in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. As a part of the celebration, Mrs. Dr. Vaneeta Aggarwal, Asst. ‘Awareness against Drug Abuse’ for NSS Volunteers today 26.06.2021 between 10.30 hrs., and 12.00 hrs. In which, Professor Tr. S. Gowri, Vice-Chancellor, University of Madras, Mr.Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal, IPS, Additional Director General of Police, Crime, Chennai and all officers from the rank of Superintendent of Police to Inspector of Police, Narcotics Intelligence Bureau, CID of Tamil Nadu and more than 600 NSS Volunteers participated.
Dignitaries have delivered their views on the ‘Ill effects of Drug Abuse’ and creating awareness among the young NSS volunteers. The Additional Director General of Police, Crime, Chennai has particularized the vision of the Narcotic Intelligence Bureau CID of Tamil Nadu that the Unit is working tirelessly for a drug-free society and to prevent drug abuse among the people of Tamil Nadu and to fight against the illicit drug trafficking and selling.
He further expressed that abuse; illicit production and trafficking of Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances have multifarious adverse effects on society. Hence, the unit is not only concentrating on the enforcement of the NDPS Act but also taking responsibility to create awareness among the general public especially students and the youth community by conducting intensive awareness campaign all over the State. He also stated that the NIB CID Unit of Tamil Nadu is putting efforts into providing financial assistance for the rehabilitation of drug offenders to prevent them from going back to illegal activities.

The Vice-Chancellor of Madras University also explained the ill effects of drug abuse and requested the NSS volunteers to pay their personal attention to creating a drug-free society.
