CHENNAI: SEPTEMBER 5: 12,000 police personnel will be providing security to idols and processions in view of Vinayaka Chaturthi celebrations, a senior police officer said. Nearly 2,500 Vinayagar idols will dot the streets across the city this Vinayagar Chaturthi, celebrated on Monday. The city police are planning to allow the processions and idol immersion. An officer said, “Last year, we told to organizers to limit the 2,500 idols. So this year we expect no new additions,” he said. The pollution watchdog in the State, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, had already stated that only clay idols will be allowed for immersion. A campaign against the use of plaster of paris and harmful chemical-laden paints to make Ganesha idols, and to be eco-friendly is also being done by some Hindu outfits. Senior police officers are meeting various Hindu outfit members like Hindu Munnani and Hindu Makkal Katchi to make sure they follow the norms.]]>
