Sub Inspector Mr. Arul Samraj was attacked by drunk gang members when he was doing his duty on 7 September, at Thalaivanavadali in Tuticorin District. MADURAI, SEPTEMBER 9: A Sub Inspector of Police (SI) Mr. Arul Samraj who had intervened to solve a dispute was allegedly attacked on the night of 7 September, the SI fainted after which the attackers fled the spot, police said. Police source say that, a dispute started between two gangs while serving of non-vegetarian food during a cultural programme in the Badrakaliamman temple at Thalaivanavadali in Tuticorin. Some people damaged tube lights and attacked the devotees. When the SI Arul Samraj rushed to diffuse the situation, the miscreants ran away. The SI gave a chase and after a few metres the Arul Samraj was surrounded by another gang that had been consuming liquor. The gang members in an inebriated condition started attacking the Arul Samraj. When Arul Samraj fainted, the gang members fled the spot. Other policemen who came in search of the SI rushed him to a private hospital, where he was treated for head injuries. After the attack, police posted pickets in the village and arrested 21 persons so far. 10 of the arrested were innocent people who had gone to visit the SI in hospital after learning about the brutal attack, say local residents. ‘’Police have arrested them without carrying out proper investigation”, the locals alleged. ]]>
