Kolkata: On March 13, Shom Bhattacharya and his wife Sushmita Bhattacharya boarded a taxi from Gariahat, bound for Naskarhat area in Kasba. With them was a bag containing gold jewellery, life-saving medicines and other valuables. On getting off the taxi, they discovered that they had left their bag behind in the vehicle. In panic, they reported the matter to Kasba Police Station, but could not recall the vehicle’s registration number.
Sub-Inspector Mr. Gaurav Bhattacharya was tasked with the investigation of this incident, and his first task was to locate the taxi. After repeated technical surveillance for hours, he was finally able to identify the correct vehicle, and get in touch with its owner. The owner said that the driver Ram Jiban Ray had indeed found a bag under the front seat, but only while dropping another passenger at Babughat. Since he was doubtful about the ownership of the bag, he had done nothing further and kept the bag with him.
Sub-Inspector Mr. Bhattacharya asked him to reach Kasba Police Station with the bag. The driver did so, and admitted he should have deposited the bag at any police station earlier. However, all’s well that ends well, and the bag with all its contents is back with its owners, who have recorded their heartfelt thanks to Kolkata Police.
