<![CDATA[On Thursday a 22-year-old youth allegedly attempted to commit suicide after Police visited his house in Periamet to make a routine enquiry, following this tension prevailed in the congested streets. Working as a daily wage labourer Bharat aged 22 was shocked to see policemen in at his house. Though police said it was a routine enquiry, the youth, fearing arrest tried to flee the spot. Family members said, after Police closed in on him, Bharat slit his throat with a blade he had in his pocket. Later, Bharat and his family members arrived at the City Police Commissioner’s Office demanding action against the cops who chased him. Following an assurance from senior officers to look into the issue, Bharat was taken to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital. But the youth was a history-sheeter and had several cases pending against him in the local police station, police said. He was reportedly arrested on charges of assault on October 2 and was released recently. A senior police official said, “The police had gone to his house as part of the routine inspection drive which was carried out to keep track of persons with criminal record”. Bharat was a drug addict, involved in criminal activities along with his friends in the locality, a relative said. ]]>
