Nilgiris: A special Anti-Naxal unit has been launched to prevent drug trafficking in the Nilgiris. Narcotics in Kerala, there are Maoist movement in the forest areas of Wayanad and Malappuram districts. Anti-Naxal police are engaged in surveillance to prevent Maoists from entering the Nilgiris district and to prevent arms and drugs from the states of Karnataka and Kerala from going to the Maoists through the Nilgiris. Accordingly, in Nilgiris, 13 policemen each in 2 divisions namely Omega-1 and Omega-2 are engaged in vehicle inspection and surveillance work. In this situation, a special anti-Naxal unit called Omega-3, which includes 36 policemen including 10 sub-inspectors, has been started in the Nilgiris.
In this regard, Additional Superintendent of Police Mr. Mohan Nawaz IPS told the reporters that the anti-Naxal unit in the Nilgiris was only involved in the anti-Maoist hunt. However, the special unit which has been formed now is going to engage in surveillance work at the checkpoints to prevent the smuggling of narcotics. They are trained in weapons handling, morale building, intricacies of vehicle inspection, dealing with dangerous situations and how to behave with the public. The local police were also involved in checking the vehicles at the checkpoints. But due to work load they could not perform well.
From 1-4-21 to 12-9-21, 39 people were arrested by the local police in Nilgiri district in the case of ganja smuggling. Also, 2 vehicles, 11 kg of ganja and 20 kg of gutka were seized. 125 people were arrested in the case of ganja smuggling from 1-4-22 to 12-9-22 when the Naxal Anti-Naxal Squad was engaged in surveillance work at the checkpoint. Also 5 vehicles, 15 kg of ganja and 4,033 kg of gutka have been seized. Thus, instead of local police, Special Forces will be on full-time duty at the checkpoint. He said thus.
