Chandigarh: On April 21, a shopkeeper in Mubarakpur reported to the Dera Bassi police that a person had stolen copper and brass utensils, as well as cash, from her shop. The accused was later identified as Yusuf, a resident of Mubarakpur Camp in Dera Bassi, and was arrested by the police on April 23. The accused was a drug addict who had allegedly committed the theft to obtain money to fulfill his addiction.
According to the complainant, Geeta Devi, Yusuf had entered her shop through the rear door and taken 12 copper glasses, two cookers, and a brass cup. When she confronted him, he pushed her and stole Rs.2,000 from the cash counter. Following the complaint, the police registered a case against the accused under Sections 379-B (snatching after preparation made for causing death, hurt or restraint in order to the committing of snatching), 380 (theft), 454 (house trespass), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and launched a manhunt.
The Dera Bassi police arrested Yusuf on April 23 and recovered the stolen utensils and snatched money from his possession. The police officials stated that the accused was a drug addict and had previously been involved in other crimes, including murder attempts and snatching. Yusuf’s addiction had allegedly led him to commit the theft and other offenses.
The police’s swift action in apprehending the accused and recovering the stolen items is commendable. It sends a clear message that the authorities will not tolerate criminal activities, particularly those linked to drug addiction. The case also highlights the need for preventive measures and rehabilitation for drug addicts to help them overcome their addiction and avoid falling into a life of crime.
