The Central Bureau of Investigation has apprehended two Superintendents, an Inspector, and a Tax Assistant from the GST & Central Excise Division at GST Bhawan in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, on charges of accepting a bribe amounting to Rs. 25,000/-.
This action was taken following a complaint against two officials from CGST, Aligarh. The complainant, an LIC agent, asserted that no business under his name had ever been registered with GST. However, he had been consistently receiving notices from the CGST Department since 2021, demanding a total of Rs. 1,70,981. The complainant further alleged that when he met both the accused at the CGST office regarding this notice, they demanded a bribe of Rs. 30,000/- to cancel it.
The CBI set up a trap. The Tax Assistant, employed in the CGST office, received the bribe of Rs. 25,000 from the complainant and passed it on to an Inspector. During the subsequent investigation, two Superintendents, an Inspector, and a Tax Assistant were apprehended, and the bribe money was recovered. Searches were conducted at five locations, including in Aligarh at the residences of the accused. Approximately Rs. 5 lakh in cash and various documents were discovered during the search.
All the arrested individuals will be presented before the Competent Court on 6th October 2023.
