AHMEDABAD: The Director General of Police (DGP) Gujarat Mr. P P Pandey ordered the removal of air conditioners from Police stations in the state within 10 days. On 27 March a message was faxed to the state police control room to all Police commissioners and District Superintendents of Police. A similar notification was issued by the Surat Police Commissioner on Monday from the state DGP that will affect all 627 police stations in Gujarat. ‘It has come to the notice of the DGP that in police stations located in both urban and rural areas many police station in-charges (police inspectors/ police sub-inspectors) install ACs – either donated by members of public, or unofficially”, the notification read. “As the ranks are not entitled for AC offices the usage of air conditioners only adds to the electricity bill of the police station and a few station in-charges are not using non air-vehicles,’’ the notification clearly mentioned. Air conditioners must be removed with immediate effect and it is the responsibility of the city/district police chief to prevent their re-installation, it added. This move would prompt the station in-charges to patrol their areas to control crime. The details of ACs removed must be mentioned with each police station’s name as to when it was installed, who got it installed and date of removal, the notice said. ]]>
