Police officers around the globe tirelessly work day and night to safeguard our communities, apprehending criminals, dismantling their operations, and upholding justice for those who disregard the principles of law and order. However, this duty exacts a significant toll.
Annually, numerous police officers in our member nations sustain injuries, and a significant number make the ultimate sacrifice, laying down their lives in the pursuit of justice.
Jürgen Stock, INTERPOL Secretary General saidevery law enforcement life lost is a tragedy. We will continue to support and honour our law enforcement colleagues, every day. Together we recognize their bravery and sacrifice.
From everyday responsibilities to counter-terrorism missions, police officers face daily risks in their efforts to safeguard the community. They become casualties of both random and deliberate assaults.
A few instances are:
Shot during a mobile phone shop robbery.
Fatally struck by a stolen pick-up truck.
Preventing a terrorist from accessing a government facility.
Apprehending a suspect wanted for a shooting.
Succumbed to drowning while assisting a distressed boat on a reservoir.
Suffered a gunshot wound to the chest while on duty at a royal event.
Lost their lives during peacekeeping missions.
Stabbed by a thief stealing a motorcycle.
Died as a result of a bus colliding with riot police.
At INTERPOL, we pay homage to the dedication and sacrifice of police officers who have lost their lives while serving their communities. We consider it our solemn duty to honor these individuals, as well as the families and friends they’ve left behind. Our General Secretariat in Lyon and our Global Complex for Innovation in Singapore each host a memorial plaque. Visitors are urged to pause and reflect on the sacrifices made within their own countries. This memorial serves as a lasting reminder that law enforcement entails more than just wearing a uniform; it’s a perilous endeavor undertaken by devoted individuals.
On the International Day of Remembrance for Fallen Police Officers, observed every 7th of March, we urge the global community to acknowledge the dangers faced by law enforcement personnel worldwide, who prioritize public service above personal safety, serving as an inspiration and shield for future generations of officers.
Despite carrying heavy hearts, police officers will continue to patrol the streets and respond to calls for assistance, all the while carrying concerns for the well-being of their loved ones. They remain steadfast in their commitment to protecting the community, never forgetting the comrades who made the ultimate sacrifice. This sentiment is expressed on the Police Memorial website.
