Mumbai: A 22-year-old man, Mohammed Haroon Idrisi, also known as Chaman, was apprehended by Kurar police in Mumbai on Saturday for allegedly trying to fatally harm a woman whom he had previously harassed. Despite being previously incarcerated for harassment, the accused, known for his aggressive behavior, assaulted the woman with a rod in the Sanjay Nagar area of Malad East around 9 am on Saturday, causing severe injuries to her head, hands, and waist. Despite the prompt notification of the incident to the authorities, it took the police over five hours to reach out to the victim’s family, angering locals who felt it gave the assailant ample time to flee. The accused, claiming to be in love with the victim, had been stalking her since expressing his feelings initially and even proposed marriage, which she declined. Despite her refusal and subsequent filing of a non-cognizable offense in 2021, the stalking persisted, leading to a molestation complaint in 2022, resulting in his imprisonment. After being released on bail, the accused resumed harassing the woman, prompting his violent attack on Saturday. He was charged with attempted murder (IPC 307) and was apprehended later that evening in Vasai by the police.
