Uttarakhand, Uttarkashi: In a crackdown on illegal liquor trade, the Purola Police arrested a woman in Naugaon on charges of possessing illicit raw liquor. The accused, identified as Nirmala, wife of the late Chandu Lal and a resident of Ward No. 05, Naugaon, was apprehended near the newly constructed parking area along Purola Road.
According to the police, the arrest was made during a routine patrol when the officers noticed suspicious activity in the area. Upon searching the accused, officials recovered 5 liters of raw, unlicensed liquor, believed to be locally brewed and intended for illegal sale or distribution.
The police immediately took Nirmala into custody and transported her to Purola police station for further questioning. Following preliminary investigation, a case was registered against her under Section 60(1) of the Excise Act, which pertains to the unlawful possession, manufacture, and distribution of intoxicating substances without a valid license.
Authorities stated that the arrest is part of an ongoing effort to curb the spread of illegal liquor in the region, which poses serious health and safety risks to the community. The police have intensified surveillance and monitoring activities across rural and semi-urban areas of Uttarkashi district, especially ahead of the upcoming festival season.
Senior officials at the Purola police station confirmed that further investigation is underway to determine whether the accused is part of a larger network engaged in the illegal liquor trade. The seized liquor samples have been sent for analysis, and additional charges may be filed depending on the outcome.
The police have urged the public to report any suspicious activities related to the sale or production of illegal liquor and assured that strict action will be taken against those found guilty.
