Haveri, Karnataka: A recent incident in Karnataka’s Haveri district has sparked widespread public outrage. Seven men accused in a January 2024 gang rape case were released on bail on May 20, 2025, and were subsequently welcomed with a celebratory procession by their supporters.
The rally featured a convoy of cars and motorcycles, loud music, and victory signs, taking place en route to Akki Alur village. Videos and photos of the event were widely shared on social media, drawing condemnation from the public.
The case involves 19 individuals who were arrested under the Hanagal Police Station limits in connection with the gang rape. While 12 were granted bail earlier, the remaining seven received bail on May 20 and were released the following day.
In response to the backlash, Haveri district police registered a fresh case against the accused for violating bail conditions and disturbing public peace. An FIR was lodged at Hanagal Police Station under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Five of the seven individuals involved in the rally have been apprehended, while police are searching for the remaining accused and their supporters.
The incident has drawn sharp criticism from political leaders. BJP State President B.Y. Vijayendra strongly condemned the rally, calling it a reflection of governance failure and a threat to citizens’ faith in justice and safety.
This event has intensified public concern about the handling of sexual violence cases and the importance of preserving the dignity of victims within the judicial system.
