Morigaon, Assam, June 2025 – Demonstrating a steadfast commitment to justice and accountability, Morigaon Police have achieved a noteworthy 39% conviction rate as of May this year, earning commendation for their meticulous investigation and prosecutorial efficiency.
In two landmark verdicts delivered by Morigaon courts:
Dipu Nath, a resident of Habiborongabari village, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Morigaon District and Sessions Court for the brutal murder of his wife in 2023. The conviction stands as a testament to the tireless work of the Mikirbheta Police and the prosecution team in ensuring justice for the victim.
In another high-profile case, Ziarul Islam, a notorious criminal who had previously escaped from the Morigaon District Jail, was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment by the Morigaon POCSO Special Court for grave offences under the POCSO Act. Additionally, he received 5 years of rigorous imprisonment for the jailbreak incident.
Hasina Begum, Ziarul Islam’s sister, was also convicted and sentenced to 5 years of rigorous imprisonment for abetting the prison escape, further reinforcing the police’s stance against any form of complicity in criminal acts.
Speaking on the achievements, the Superintendent of Police (Crime Branch), Morigaon District, affirmed that these successful convictions reflect the Morigaon Police’s zero-tolerance approach to heinous crimes and fugitive offenders. The force remains committed to strengthening the justice delivery system and ensuring that no criminal goes unpunished.
