Kozhikode, Kerala, Sept 8: In a major breakthrough against cybercrime, the Chombala Police arrested the main accused in a serious cyber fraud and extortion case from Mali, Aurangabad district, Bihar. The accused has been identified as Abhimanyu Kumar (22), son of Ranji Chauhan, of Sardiha Village, Nabi Nagar, Aurangabad.
The case was registered following a complaint by a woman from Azhiyur, whose mobile phone ID was hacked after she clicked on a loan advertisement on Instagram. The accused extorted money and, when further demands were refused, morphed obscene photos of the woman and her minor daughter to threaten her.
Under the direct instructions of District Police Chief K.E. Baiju IPS, Inspector Sethunath S.R. led the investigation, which tracked crucial leads through bank accounts, mobile numbers, and social media analysis. A special police team comprising SI Jeffin Raju, Senior Civil Police Officer Sajith P.T., and Civil Police Officer Rajesh M.K. traveled to Bihar to apprehend the accused with the support of Mali Police.
The operation was challenging and high-risk, as the accused had past links to violent activities in the region. Displaying remarkable courage and persistence, the police team pursued the accused on foot through difficult terrain during night hours and successfully surrounded and arrested him.
The accused was produced before the court and remanded to temporary custody, while further investigation is underway to nab other accomplices and dismantle the cybercrime network.
