Fatehabad, Haryana: Highlighting the growing threat of cybercrime, Superintendent of Police Nikita Khattar has cautioned the public that losing a mobile phone can quickly lead to serious financial fraud if immediate action is not taken.
She noted that in today’s digital age, mobile phones store sensitive data including banking apps, UPI services, emails, and social media accounts. If such a device falls into the wrong hands, cybercriminals can misuse SIM cards, access accounts, retrieve OTPs, and even defraud contacts by impersonating the victim.
The SP emphasized that even a small delay in response can result in major financial losses, urging citizens to act swiftly and stay vigilant.
Immediate Steps After Losing a Phone:
• Contact your telecom provider to block the SIM
• Log out or temporarily block banking and UPI apps (like PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm)
• Change passwords for email, social media, and other accounts
• Use tracking tools like Find My Device or Find My iPhone to locate or wipe data
• Report the loss at the nearest police station
Precautionary Measures:
• Enable screen lock (PIN, password, fingerprint)
• Activate security features like MPIN or biometrics for banking apps
• Store sensitive data securely and avoid unknown app downloads
• Regularly back up important data
In Case of Cyber Fraud:
• Dial the National Cyber Helpline: 1930
• Report online at National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal
• Inform your bank immediately
Reiterating her message, SP Nikita Khattar urged citizens not to take mobile phone loss lightly and to prioritize digital security at all times.
