Thiruvallur, Tamil Nadu: A surprise inspection was conducted in the Hariharan Bazaar and Railway Station Road areas of Ponneri Municipality. Led by Sanitary Inspector A. Samuel, the operation was carried out under the directives of the Additional Chief Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Government, the Thiruvallur District Collector, the Regional Director of Municipal Administration (Chengalpattu Zone), and Ponneri Municipal Commissioner Nalayini. During the inspection, single-use plastic items banned by the Tamil Nadu government were found in shops. Approximately 100 kg of banned plastic materials were seized, and a fine of ₹10,000 was imposed. It is reiterated that the use of single-use plastic items—which are banned by the Tamil Nadu government and flagged by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board—is strictly prohibited in restaurants, shops, and commercial establishments within the Ponneri Municipality limits. If the sale, possession, or use of such items is detected, fines ranging from ₹1,000 to ₹25,000 will be imposed, the materials will be confiscated, and legal action will be taken against the shops. Therefore, the public is urged to avoid banned plastic items and use cloth bags instead.
