Warangal, Telangana: A 45-year-old man died by suicide following a family dispute over ancestral property at Narrengathanda, on the outskirts of Munjalakunta Thanda in Parvathagiri mandal of Warangal district, on Monday.
According to police, the deceased, Banoth Jawaharlal, had two wives. He had two sons with his first wife and two daughters with his second wife. He had reportedly been staying with his second wife in recent days.
Police said a dispute had developed among family members over seven acres of ancestral property. On Monday, Jawaharlal’s mother, Shalamma, reportedly confronted him over her gold earrings, which he was alleged to have taken. During the ensuing argument, Jawaharlal reportedly expressed distress and made statements indicating that he wanted to end his life.
He subsequently attempted suicide, but his mother reportedly intervened and tried to stop him. During the continuing argument, his first wife, Lakshmi, allegedly made a statement telling him that he could die wherever he stayed. Police said Jawaharlal then made another attempt.
According to the investigation, Jawaharlal had allegedly made similar attempts in the past, leading family members to initially believe that he was making threats during the dispute. However, the situation turned fatal when the ligature tightened.
The deceased’s younger daughter-in-law reportedly recorded the argument on her mobile phone. Police registered a case based on a complaint lodged by Jawaharlal’s father and have begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
Police are examining the family dispute, the circumstances leading to the suicide and the mobile-phone recording as part of the investigation.
