Guwahati: The Meghalaya Police have been notified about the drug peddlers who are involved in supplying drugs especially to the recruits of the Indian Army. This supply is not restricted to the Army personal but is reaching out to all sections of the society. On investigation conducted by the Army officials it has been found out that the drugs have reached the hands of the recruits through the local civilians living in that area, a Shillong-based defense spokesperson said on July 9. On conducting the investigation it has been found that undivided Assam comprising of present-day northeast Shillong has been a hub for drug trade and addiction. The drug cartels had been using the city as a hub for the illegal trade from Myanmar via Mizoram. A major arrest was made by the Special Narcotics Squad and Criminal Investigation Department of the Mizoram Police on July 6th. The arrested persons numbered eight which included three women and the security personal have seized heroin and cannabis worth Rs.13.3 lakh. They were arrested from Hringlangtang village in Champhai district bordering Myanmar. It has been identified that Zokhathawr in Champhai district is a major border trade center. The Mizoram Police in connection with drug peddling arrested 29 people almost a month ago and seized from their possession 1,085.97 grams of heroin, 1,21,800 methamphetamine tablets, small arms and a few exotic animals such as black parrots, black cockatoos, emus, and an owl monkey. The seized items when estimated were together worth Rs.2.21 crore. A police officer in Meghalaya said the drug network has spread to a great extent and the police have intensified the fight against the drug mafia and have cracked down on illegal outlets. Based on a confidential piece of information received by the police they took into custody 15 personal on July 4 for possessing heroin. On conducting the interrogation they revealed the details based on which the police arrested the accused from different parts of Shillong. During further investigation, the police have also identified some schools and colleges where students have fallen prey to drug dealers.]]>
