MANGALURU: Police registered a case against a man who had allegedly attempted to steal Basadi in Moodbidri, Dakshina Kannada district on Wednesday. During the interrogation, the man admitted that he had attempted to burgle the Thribhuvana Thilaka Choodamani Basadi in Moodbidri. Basadi is a Jain shrine or temple. The word is generally used in South India, including Maharashtra. Its historical use in North is preserved in the names of the Vimala Vasahi and Luna Vasahi temples of Mount Abu. The Sanskrit word is vasati, it implies an institution including residences of scholars attached to the shrine. The accused was arrested who hailed from the same location and is identified as Punith Shetty. Following the incident, the Mangaluru police have strengthened the security in order to prevent from future occurrence again by putting up a special beat for the basadi.
