TRICHY: On Tuesday a large quantity of gutka was seized by the Maravathur police when they were informed by the local people in the village. The police seized 320kg of banned gutka and arrested two persons.
The accused were smuggling the banned gutka products in a sports utility vehicle(SUV). The accused were identified as K.Rajadurai aged 49 and T.Bomaram aged 26. Both are from Srinivasapuram locality in Thanjavur city.
As the two accused were heading to Thanjavur from Attur in Salem district in an SUV that was carrying 20 gunny bags of the gutka that they were smuggling was nearly approaching Persali village near Perambalur. The SUV went and hit a roadside tree. The two occupants of the car escaped unhurt and they were busy retrieving the gutka products that were thrown on the road after the accident.
As the villagers came and saw what the two people were doing they informed the matter to the Maruvathur police who immediately reached the spot and on inspecting the SUV the police found Rs.1.20 Lakh worth banned gutka in the gunny bags. The police seized the gutka and arrested the two for smuggling the banned gutka.
