Chennai: On Friday, social media was abuzz as a female IPS officer took a bicycle and turned around to check whether police personnel patrolling in north Chennai was effective.
That police officer, Ms. R.V. Ramya Bharathi, 2008 Batch IPS Officer, North, Greater Chennai Police Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP).
Dressed in a T-shirt, she arrived on a bicycle early Friday morning to check on patrol checkpoints, and her personal security accompanied her on another bicycle to show her the routes.
She started her rounds from the War Memorial at 2.45 am and proceeded over Muthusamy Bridge, Raja Annamalai Mandram, Esplanade Road, Kuralagam, NSC Bose Road and Govindappa Nike Street. She traveled about 10 km on R.K Nagar, Tondiarpet and Thiruvottiyur High Road. Went on patrolling points on a bicycle,
The night patrol vehicle stopped wherever it saw the team and inquired about the situation. She noted her trip in a diary maintained by the patrolling team.
Since I am a senior officer, it is difficult to get direct information about what is going on in the field until we get there. Otherwise, when we go in an official vehicle day or night, it is difficult to diagnose the situation at the patrolling point as there is a sense of alertness and vigilance.
When we go into anonymity, we find out the real situation. Only then will we look at how effective our night rounds are and ways to improve them. “It is an exercise to assess and check the situation, so I plan to conduct such random inspections once in 15 days,” R.V. Ramya Bharathi, the Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP) North, Greater Chennai (JCP) told to Media.
