COIMBATORE: An unidentified three-member gang entered into the safe vault of a nationalized bank after using gas welding machine and cut the iron grills, lockers and decamped with valuables worth nearly 130 sovereigns on Wednesday here in Chennai, Police said. A senior Police officer said, “There is a suspicion that around 130 sovereigns of valuables were stolen, though the bank did not mention any specific amount”. The burglary was noticed on Wednesday morning after a staff of the United Bank of India in charge of the vault entered the room to check the lockers. He found the doors of two cupboards tampered with and the front grill damaged, Police said. The incident happened in the last four days when the bank was closed for Pongal holidays and the burglars gained access through a school ground to which the iron grill is facing, police said. A senior Police officer said, “First the burglars entered the ground floor of the two-storey building through the window after breaking the glass panel and cut the grill and the locker doors with the gas welding machine, leaving back the three machines used for burglary and left in the same way they entered the bank’’.
