Cachar, Assam: In a major breakthrough against drug trafficking, the Cachar Police on Thursday seized 21,600 bottles of illegal cough syrup valued at approximately ₹2.16 crore during an operation at Madhura Point in Rongpur, under the jurisdiction of Silchar Police Station.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs regarding the transportation of narcotic substances, a police team intercepted a truck bearing registration number WB-29B-1996, which was reportedly traveling from Kolkata to Tripura via the Lumding–Silchar route.
During a detailed search of the vehicle, the police discovered 36 iron drums, each containing four cartons of ESKUF cough syrup. Each carton held 150 bottles, totaling 21,600 bottles of the restricted substance.
Cachar Senior Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta confirmed that the seizure was made in the presence of independent witnesses. “The consignment was being illegally transported from West Bengal, and we are investigating the network involved in this smuggling operation,” he said.
The two accused, identified as Bapi Halder (45) and Tapash Biswas (42), both residents of West Bengal, have been taken into custody.
Police sources said that the seized cough syrup, commonly misused as an intoxicant, was likely meant for illegal distribution in the Northeast. A case has been registered, and further investigations are underway to identify other members of the trafficking syndicate.
