On 29th March 2023, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered a case against a Neuro Surgeon and four others for various allegations, including bribery, and subsequently arrested them. The accused Neuro Surgeon was working at Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi and was allegedly involved in illegal activities, along with the other accused, who were acting as middlemen, including private persons and the proprietor of a private surgical shop in New Delhi.
According to the allegations, the Neuro Surgeon and his accomplices were bypassing the laid-down rules and regulations for medical treatment at Safdarjung Hospital and taking money for providing medical advice and conducting surgeries for the patients. The accused Doctor was also reportedly directing the patients through these middlemen to purchase the instruments required for surgery from the Surgical Shop of the private proprietor, where they were allegedly forced to pay an amount higher than the actual price. The Neuro Surgeon allegedly received a share of the over billing by the shop owner.
The allegations also included three separate instances where the accused Doctor allegedly took bribes of Rs. 1,15,000/-, Rs. 55,000/-, and Rs. 30,000/- from the attendants of patients through a private person acting as a middleman. The bribe amounts were allegedly transferred to the bank account of another private individual, as directed by the accused Doctor.
It was further alleged that the accused Doctor was laundering his illegally earned money through companies being managed by a private person. As part of the investigation, searches were conducted at various locations in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, which led to the recovery of incriminating documents, digital devices, and other pieces of evidence.
The arrested accused, including the Neuro Surgeon, were produced before the competent court in Delhi. The case is ongoing, and further investigation is underway.
