Rachakonda: Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) celebrated the 72nd Republic Day with Mr. Mahesh Bhagwat, IPS., Commissioner of Rachakonda, as the Chief Guest.
During the ceremony, Dr. Rakesh Mishra, Director, CCMB addressed the audience on the different challenges faced during COVID-19. He explained how CCMB emerged with innovative ways of handling research activities while formulating various cheap and robust methods of testing COVID-19 samples.
Mr. Bhagwat IPS touched upon the importance of Poorna Swaraj and the Constitution of India that came into force in the year 1950. He inspired us on dispensing our duties and responsibilities to maintain the scientific temper. He recalled his meeting with Dr. PM Bhargava, Founder Director, CCMB where he was impressed upon the need of fighting superstitions among the populace of India.
Among CCMB’s contributions to enhancing lives, Mr. Bhagwat IPS especially dwelled upon the importance of wildlife forensics and DNA fingerprinting. He recollected on an earlier case of a tigress killed in the Hyderabad zoo and where its skin was traced in Mumbra, Maharashtra – a case that was solved by CCMB and its wildlife forensic services. He alluded to CCMB’s contributions in solving paternity disputes and criminal cases via DNA fingerprinting technology – one that has helped the Rachakonda police as well. He appreciated CCMB’s multifaceted research activities, especially during COVID-19 setting newer standards for science and technology in the country. He congratulated AIC-CCMB’s newer ventures of supporting life science entrepreneurs through the recently awarded NIDHI-SSS grants.
