Chennai, March 14: — Chennai Police is trying to implement a crime mapping system using the Geographic Information System (GIS) to identify crime hotspots.
Aditional Commissioner of Police (South) Mr N Cannon Nagarajan told the media about the technology, saying the new system would help them use data and information to equip themselves with accurate decision-making intelligence.
It has four main elements: the nature of the crime, the place, the time and the crime. These are plotted on a map and this data provides the officer with the necessary information. This is called “evidence-based policing,” the Aditional commissioner said.
According to reports, the map includes data from the past five years, FIR details from the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems (CCTNS), CSR information from police stations, call data from the emergency helpline 100, 112, 1098 control rooms, 1091, and 181, and Kavalan SOS mobile Inputs are made from the application,
Aditional commissioner N Cannon Nagarajan said the data could be used to study and understand the pattern and method of the offender. He said the new technology would introduce a technique called Predictive Analysis, which would allow authorities to assess action before a criminal commits a crime using data from his previous crime.
“Even after a convict is released from prison, they do not drastically change their design and activities. Previous crime data can help monitor their activities,” Mr N Cannon Nagarajan said.
One of the main benefits of mapping is that police officers can conduct awareness programs for people living in and around specific criminal hotspots. “Data will be collected from the State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB) and within two-three months, the mapping technology will be used for investigation and crime prevention,” Additional Commissioner Mr N Cannon Nagarajan said.
