New Delhi: A man and his wife have been arrested in Jaipur for allegedly defrauding several people of crores of rupees by awarding railway and government contracts, Delhi police said on Tuesday.
The accused, Abhishek Agarwal, 38, and his wife Meenakshi, 34, of Supal district in Bihar, have been wanted in at least four criminal cases and have been absconding for the past three years.
In the last five years, the duo has defrauded big business and property dealers to the tune of nearly Rs.20 crore, police said.
Victims were accustomed to their luxurious lifestyles, and police said they paid two advances in the hope that government contracts would come in. After taking the advances, the couple switched off their mobile phones and fled.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Mr. Vikram Singh said police teams had analyzed several mobile numbers used by the couple.
“The couple lived a very luxurious lifestyle and the victims hoped to get any government contract through their contacts. When people came to them, they demanded crores of rupees. After taking the money, they fled,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Mr. Vikram Singh.
During interrogation, police found the couple in Jaipur. They were taken into custody and later arrested, a police official said.
