New Delhi: Delhi Police Commissioner Mr. Rakesh Asthana IPS on Thursday said that a special unit for drones would be set up in two-three years.
Commissioner Mr. Rakesh Asthana IPS told the media at his annual press meet that he would introduce law and order arrangements, situation awareness, traffic management, protection of vulnerable installations and surveillance drones, and counter-dun equipment.
“Delhi Police is gearing up with drone technology and with this in mind, in the next two to three years, we will have a specialized unit not only for the use of drones but also for its operation and maintenance,” he said.
Emphasizing the efficient use of technology, Delhi Police currently operates more than 15,215 CCTV cameras in the national capital, but will soon install another 10,000 CCTV cameras under the “Safe City Project”, valued at Rs.890 crore, funded by the government through the Nirbhaya Fund.
The police chief said that almost 90 percent of cases are solved through scanning of CCTV cameras and mobile forensics and technology plays a key role in resolving cases.
Following the launch of the ‘Safe City Project’, the Delhi Police will integrate the existing 15,215 CCTV cameras and 1.40 lakh CCTV cameras set up by the Delhi government and other CCTVs such as Market Welfare Associations, Residents’ Welfare Associations, etc. Delhi Police said.
Under the Safe City project, a state-of-the-art integrated command and control center with state-of-the-art video analytics using artificial intelligence, machine learning, and predictive policing techniques will also be set up, police said.
