Chennai: A database is being compiled by the personal of the Police Department to load into an app that was launched in February 2019 by the Chennai City Police. The database that is being compiled comprises the details of stolen mobile phones and two wheelers of the Southern States. The name of the app is DigiCop. This app, DigiCop will be helpful to the prospective buyers to verify whether a mobile phone that they are going to purchase is stolen or not. It will be useful to the police to verify the same. Until recently only police, officials of the designation of Inspectors and Sub-Inspectors could access the mobile application and detect the status of the mobile phone using the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number. With the introduction of DigiCop all users can access this application and find out the status. The objective of this app is to reduce the demand of stolen mobiles and vehicles in the grey market. The collection of data of stolen or missing mobile phones and vehicles has begun and the details will be collected from all parts of the state and the southern states and any user can track a stolen mobile phone from anywhere within the southern states. The task of collecting the data from the southern states has been given to the Additional Commissioners of Police. They will be responsible for this task to be completed successfully. The police are tasked with the responsibility of entering the details of thefts of mobiles and vehicles is entered into the app as and when a complaint is received. A senior police officer said from now on stolen mobiles could not be sold into the market as the mobile sellers can install the app to avoid purchasing stolen mobiles. Think Infinity developed the DigiCop app on the instructions of the city Police Commissioner. The development of the app was overseen by Mr. P.Aravindan and Mr. G.Shashank Sai, Deputy Commissioners of Police, who are qualified as postgraduates in engineering. Now mobile users can download this app and the benefits that can be enjoyed by the users are by using this app the user can lodge online complaints or know the status of the complaint, can access community service register (CSR) and first information report (FIR) or verify the status of any mobile phone and two-wheeler. Mr. Viswanathan said after the launch of DigiCop app in February a large number of downloads were recorded to the extent of 72,155. During purchase of mobile phones, 4,086 persons checked the status using the IMEI search to verify the genuineness of the handsets. Reports of loss or theft of mobile phones were given by 8,311 persons and 1,227 phones and 151 two wheelers were recovered. So far the details of 26,879 stolen mobiles were uploaded. ]]>
