Andhra Pradesh, Srikakulam: District SP Shri K.V. Maheswara Reddy, IPS, has issued important safety guidelines to the public for a safe and joyous Diwali celebration. He emphasized that, while Diwali brings light and happiness, mishandling fireworks can lead to accidents, bringing sadness and harm instead. To prevent such incidents, he urged all citizens, especially those with children, to follow these safety precautions for eye, ear, and body protection:
Fireworks should only be sold with proper permits from the Police and relevant authorities, and shops must be set up in open spaces away from populated areas. A minimum distance of 3 meters must be maintained between shops, with sufficient sand, water, and fire extinguishers readily available nearby.
The illegal manufacturing, possession, sale, and transport of fireworks is a punishable offense, and violators will face legal action. Fireworks must never be made at home, as improper handling could lead to serious accidents. Buying fireworks from licensed, quality shops is advised, and all safety measures should be observed when transporting them by vehicle due to the potential risk posed by fuel.
Low-noise fireworks like flowerpots, sparklers, and chakris are preferable to high-decibel crackers. Stand back immediately after lighting fireworks to avoid burns from heat, and never approach unexploded fireworks. Protective eyewear is also recommended, and fireworks should be stored away from kitchens, stoves, and gas cylinders, and always set off outdoors, away from the house or terrace.
Avoid wearing loose clothing around fireworks, as it increases the risk of fire. Keep explosive items away from containers or objects that could shatter, causing injuries upon explosion.
Children should never handle fireworks alone. Adult supervision is essential, and flammable materials must be cleared from the area. Only light one firework at a time, and avoid re-lighting duds. Have water and sand ready as a precaution.
In case of burns, rinse the area under running water without rubbing it and seek medical attention. For eye injuries, gently cover the affected eye and seek immediate medical help. Severe burns can affect breathing or cause fingers to stick together; in such cases, use a damp cloth between fingers and consult a doctor urgently.
SP Shri K.V. Maheswara Reddy, IPS, urged everyone to follow these safety measures diligently to ensure a safe and accident-free Diwali for all.
