Kottayam, Kerala: In a major victory for child protection and justice, the Honorable Erattupetta Fast Track Special Court (POCSO) sentenced Siraj (37), son of Saidu Mohammed, a resident of Keriyamthottam area, Nadakkal Karayil, Erattupetta village, Meenachil taluk, to 62 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹2,10,000 in a shocking case of unnatural sexual assault on a minor boy. The court has directed that ₹1,75,000 from the fine be paid to the minor victim as compensation.
The verdict highlights the strong and effective investigation carried out by the police. The crime occurred on 08/05/2023, and a case was promptly registered by SI Jibin Thomas of Erattupetta Police Station, who also arrested the accused without delay. Further investigation was completed meticulously by SHO Subramanian, Erattupetta Police Station, leading to the preparation and submission of a comprehensive charge sheet.
During the trial, the prosecution—led by Special Public Prosecutor Adv. Jose Mathew Thayyil—presented 21 witnesses and 27 documentary evidences, ensuring that the accused faced the full force of the law. Honorable POCSO Court Judge Smt. Roshan Thomas delivered the sentence based on various sections of the IPC and the POCSO Act.
