BENGALURU: Police have arrested a 27-year-old man who tried to extort money from passengers by creating a false story that his ailing father was hospitalized and needed urgent medical attention, officials said. Some people who saw his behavior informed the suspicious police.
Following complaints, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) took the accused Vignesh into custody from Chennai and the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) police registered a case under Section 420 against him on Sunday.
According to CISF sources, Vignesh was caught red-handed around 7.30 pm on Saturday. “We found 26 credit cards in his wallet. 24 of them were valid. To appear like a genuine traveler, he had booked a flight to Chennai to enter the airport. Later, he asked for Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000 for the emergency treatment of his father, who was admitted to the hospital.
He was apparently part of a gang with a few others involved. A top source said that an investigation is underway in this regard.
“This kind of activity is rare at an airport. Two years ago, a similar incident was reported at Bengaluru Airport. A similar incident took place at the Mumbai airport recently.
