Madurai: A mysterious gang broke the locks of adjacent houses in Vagaikulam, New Vikash Nagar, and Rangaraj Nagar near Alankanallur in the Madurai district, stealing 23 pounds of gold jewelry from a bureau and causing a stir in the area. Subpuratnam (54), a teacher at a government primary school in Chinnaurchery near Alankanallur, lives in New Vikas Nagar, Rangaraj Nagar with her husband, Sakthivel Pandian. Yesterday morning, they locked their house as usual and went to work. When they returned home at 6 in the evening, they found the doors had been broken. Inside, they discovered that 22 pounds of gold jewelry stored in the bureau were missing. Similarly, Pandiyarajan (34), a medical representative living nearby, was shocked to find his door broken when he returned from work with his wife at 5 pm. Upon entering, he found that the bureau had been broken into and a one-pound gold chain had been stolen. The Alanganallur police have registered a case and are conducting serious investigations into these two separate incidents of theft. A few days ago, a similar incident occurred where the lock of a police inspector’s house in the same area was broken, resulting in the theft of jewelry worth about 450 pounds. Recurring robberies by mysterious gangs targeting unoccupied houses in the area have become a concern. Residents have demanded swift police action to catch the robbers and the installation and monitoring of CCTV cameras in the area.
