Kerala, Wayanad: In a major crackdown on drug peddling, a habitual cannabis seller operating within the premises of a private hospital was arrested by the police. The accused, Ranjith Sashi (24), a resident of Moopainad, Tezha Arapatta, was apprehended by the District Police Chief’s Anti-Narcotics Squad in coordination with Meppadi Police.
Ranjith Sashi has a history of criminal involvement, with multiple cases registered against him. He was previously booked in a robbery case at Kannur Town Police Station, a cannabis possession case at Meppadi Police Station, a theft case, and also faces charges under the POCSO Act. Despite his past offenses, he continued to engage in illegal activities, reportedly selling cannabis regularly in the hospital vicinity.
On the night of March 21, 2025, during a routine police inspection near the parking lot of VIMS Hospital, officers noticed Ranjith behaving suspiciously. Upon spotting the police, he attempted to flee in panic, but was swiftly intercepted by the officers. A search of his bag led to the recovery of 412.4 grams of cannabis, which was found neatly packed for distribution. The contraband was divided into 9 large packets and 12 smaller packets, clearly intended for sale.
The successful operation was carried out by a police team led by SIs Sharafuddin and Varun, along with CPO Jablu Rahman and driver SCPO Shahjahan. The arrest marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to curb drug trafficking in the region, ensuring that criminal activities, especially near sensitive locations such as hospitals, are strictly dealt with.
