Hyderabad City, Telangana: Hyderabad Police Commissioner Shri V.C. Sajjanar instructed officials that road safety measures will be further intensified within the Hyderabad Police Commissionerate limits with the aim of preventing road accidents and safeguarding pedestrians.
Chairing a coordination committee meeting of allied departments at the Integrated Command and Control Center (ICCC) on Friday, the Commissioner emphasized that road safety is not the responsibility of a single department, and that accidents can be reduced only through effective coordination and joint action.
The meeting was attended by Traffic Joint Commissioner of Police Shri Joel Davis, District Collector Smt. Harichandana Dasari, Khairatabad Zonal Commissioner Smt. Priyanka Ala, and Deputy Transport Commissioner Shri Ramesh, along with senior officials of GHMC, R&B, RTC, NHAI, MoRTH, UNICEF and various NGOs.
Focus on Accident Prevention, Black Spot Rectification
Speaking at the meeting, the Commissioner directed officials to continuously monitor and promptly rectify accident-prone locations (black spots) across the city. He stressed the importance of modern barricading and divider systems to enhance road discipline and prevent collision points.
Officials briefed that out of 45 identified black spots within the Commissionerate limits, 42 have already been rectified.
Pedestrian Safety and Infrastructure Improvements
Highlighting pedestrian safety, the Commissioner stated that zebra crossings would be installed at more locations, and safe road-crossing mechanisms would be ensured through infrastructure such as footpaths and Foot Over Bridges (FoBs).
Officials reported that:
* Lane marking has been completed on 1,687.76 km of roads
* 4,585 zebra crossings and 4,047 transverse bar markings have been installed
* 3,335 traffic signboards indicating speed limits and directions have been erected
* Repairs have been completed on 212 km of footpaths
* 15 out of 23 sanctioned Foot Over Bridges are now operational
To ensure night-time safety, the Commissioner instructed departments to maintain a robust lighting system and ensure non-functional streetlights are repaired promptly.
Public Awareness & Enforcement
The Commissioner noted that greater awareness must be created among students in schools and colleges regarding traffic rules and road safety. He also added that encroachments on footpaths would be removed regularly to prevent inconvenience to pedestrians.
Monthly Review Mechanism Introduced
To sustain progress, the Commissioner proposed holding coordination committee meetings on the second Friday of every month to review ongoing road safety works and implement corrective measures.
The meeting concluded with several key decisions aimed at strengthening accident prevention, pedestrian safety, and coordinated enforcement within the city.
