Madurai, Tamil Nadu: The steadfast efforts of the Madurai District Police have led to a remarkable reduction in crime across the suburban district, particularly in curbing the menace of drugs and illegal substances. Acting on the directive of the District Superintendent of Police, officers have intensified their fight against the smuggling and sale of ganja, gutka, and illicit liquor.
Over the past three years, police have registered 753 cases against individuals involved in ganja trafficking, arresting the offenders and seizing 1,922.784 kg of ganja along with 231 vehicles used in the illegal trade. In the same period, 542 accused in these cases have been convicted by the courts.
Similarly, in the battle against gutka, police have booked 1,105 cases, arresting those responsible and confiscating 6,079.433 kg of gutka and 31 vehicles linked to its sale. Notably, 755 offenders have been convicted in court over the past three years for gutka-related crimes.
Beyond enforcement, Madurai Police are actively working to prevent drug abuse through awareness initiatives. The Anti-Drug Club has been established in 187 schools, 30 colleges, and 38 vocational training centres, with a dedicated police officer assigned to each institution. These officers conduct regular awareness programs, form student groups to monitor and report drug-related issues, and take prompt preventive action.
The combined approach of strict law enforcement and proactive community engagement stands as a model for tackling drug-related challenges and protecting the youth of Madurai.
