Medchal-Malkajgiri, Telangana: As per the instructions of Sri Avinash Mohanty, IPS, Commissioner of Police, Malkajgiri Police Commissionerate, the Traffic Police have launched an in-novative initiative titled “Helmet Bank” with the objective of safeguarding the lives of two-wheeler riders. The program, which was inaugurated on Monday, has been implemented in the Begumpet area from today onwards.
Sri K. Rahul Reddy, IPS, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic-1, Malkajgiri, stated that two-wheeler riders found without helmets will be identified and their details recorded before issuing a helmet on a temporary basis. Riders are instructed to purchase a new helmet within 24 hours and return the borrowed helmet to the Helmet Bank. Further, stated that not only riders but also pillion riders must mandatorily wear helmets. Children aged 4 years and above travelling on two-wheelers should also wear helmets to ensure their safety.
According to their study, a significant percentage of deaths in road accidents involving two-wheeler riders occur due to the non-use of helmets. During in-sections, many riders reportedly offer excuses such as forgetting the helmet at home in a hurry, fear of hair loss, or head and neck discomfort as reasons for not wearing helmets.
He emphasized that the primary objective is not merely to impose challans but to create awareness about life safety. Through this Helmet Bank initiative, the department aims to ensure that every rider strictly complies with helmet regulations. After recording the rider’s details, the helmet will be is-sued on loan and must be returned to the bank within 24 hours.
The initiative will soon be extended to Alwal and Tirumalagiri areas.
