CHENNAI: More than 100 doctors from Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and students from Madras Medical College staged a protest on Monday seeking release of government doctor who has been lodged in a Lucknow prison after a complaint against him by a moneylender. The doctors wanted the State to intervene and secure his release. Dr M Sudheer, working as senior professor with the orthopaedics department of Madras Medical College (MMC), in Chennai, had arrested from the hospital and lodged in a jail in Lucknow after a money dispute with Kamaraj, a local money lender. It is alleged that the doctor had borrowed `20 lakh for his children’s education expenses and for building his home a few years ago. A Police complaint was filed against the doctor in the Teynampet police station and a petition is pending before a court in Chennai. The two had a dispute over repayment. The moneylender reportedly approached a gang in Uttar Pradesh, that had filed a Police complaint in Lucknow stating that the doctor received Rs. 1 crore after promising permission for a new medical college. Last Thursday Kamaraj was arrested by Police here under various sections of the IPC and Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Charging Exorbitant Interest Act 2003.]]>
