During the diamond jubilee celebrations of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the agency as a brand for justice and hope, having given strength to the common citizen. The CBI was established by a resolution of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, dated 1st April 1963, with the primary responsibility of making the country corruption-free.
In his address, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of professional and efficient institutions such as the CBI for India’s progress. He noted that the agency’s scope of work has expanded manifold, from investigating bank frauds to wildlife-related frauds and cybercrimes. However, the primary responsibility of the CBI remains to make the country free from corruption.
PM Modi also highlighted how corrupt practices had ruined the basis of India’s economy and banking system before 2014. He stated that, ten years ago, there was a competition to do more and more corruption, leading to big scams, but the accused were not afraid because the system supported them. Since 2014, the government has been working on a mission mode against the root causes of corruption and hoarders of black money.
Corruption, according to the Prime Minister, is the biggest enemy of talent, and where there is corruption, the youth do not get proper opportunities. A special ecosystem of nepotism and “parivarvad” flourishes in such an environment. Therefore, the government has ensured utmost transparency in the systems and processes of allocation of 2G and 5G spectrum, reflecting the government’s commitment towards transparency.
PM Modi also acknowledged the powerful people who have been part of the government and the system for years and are still in power in some states. He encouraged the CBI to focus on their work, stating that no corrupt person should be spared.
On the occasion, the Prime Minister conferred the President’s Police Medal to 18 officers of CBI for their distinguished service and gave away Gold Medals to three officers for Best Investigating Officers. The Prime Minister also inaugurated newly constructed office complexes of CBI at Shillong, Pune, and Nagpur.
PM Modi also released a postage stamp and commemorative coin marking the Diamond Jubilee Celebration year of CBI. He also launched the CBI Twitter handle, acknowledging the importance of social media in today’s world.
Overall, the Prime Minister’s address at the CBI diamond jubilee celebration emphasized the importance of eradicating corruption, promoting transparency, and creating a corruption-free environment to nurture and strengthen India’s progress.
