Mr. Praveen Sood, an esteemed IPS officer belonging to the 1986 Batch of the Karnataka Cadre, has officially taken on the significant role of Director at the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as of today. His appointment comes after his successful tenure as the Director General of Police in Karnataka, where he showcased exceptional leadership and expertise.
Having served in the Indian Police Service for an impressive span of approximately 37 years, Mr. Sood has held a multitude of crucial positions that have fortified his extensive experience. Some notable roles include serving as the Superintendent of Police in Bellary and Raichur, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) in Bengaluru City, Commissioner of Police in Mysuru City and Bengaluru City, Assistant Director General of Police (ADGP), Principal Secretary (Home), Director General of Police (Internal Security), and Director General of Police (CID). Furthermore, his contributions extended beyond national borders as he worked as an advisor to the Government of Mauritius.
Throughout his distinguished career, Mr. Praveen Sood has garnered immense recognition for overseeing the investigation of high-profile cases involving individuals of significant financial standing, as well as cases with inter-state and international ramifications. He has consistently displayed his adeptness in the investigation and detection of various forms of crime, including cybercrime and information technology-related offenses. Notably, he spearheaded efforts to enhance the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems (CCTNS) and Interoperable Criminal Justice System (ICJS) networks in Karnataka, working collaboratively with the judiciary to strengthen the state’s criminal justice infrastructure.
Academically, Mr. Praveen Sood holds a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. He further pursued his education and earned a Post-Graduation degree in Public Policy & Management from the esteemed Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bengaluru and the Maxwell School of Governance at Syracuse University, New York.
Recognizing his exceptional contributions, Mr. Praveen Sood has been honored with the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2011, the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2002, and the Chief Minister’s Gold Medal for Excellence in Service in 1996. Moreover, he has received accolades such as the National e-Governance Gold Award for “Most innovative use of technology for Traffic Management” in 2011 and the Prince Michael International Road Safety Award in 2006, recognizing his significant efforts in promoting road safety and effective traffic management.
