Kozhikode: In Kozhikode city, on Tuesday, the Forest Intelligence Wing and officials from the Thamarassery Forest Range conducted an operation resulting in the arrest of three individuals on charges of trading deer musk. The suspects were identified as Mustafa from Kuruvattur, Abdul Salam from Pantheerankavu, and Haris from Peringathur. During the arrest, the trio were discovered to be in possession of deer musk, which is a protected variety obtained from deceased musk deer.
The collection and trade of musk is illegal in India, and those found guilty of violating this law can face harsh penalties. Musk deer, which are primarily found in the Himalayas and parts of central Asia, are listed as a vulnerable species due to habitat loss, poaching, and hunting. This illegal trade poses a significant threat to the already vulnerable musk deer population and is a major concern for wildlife conservationists.
